NELSON NIÑO has been a full-time professor of the Institute of Music at the Catholic University of Valparaiso-Chile (UCV) since 2001. In 1993 he earned his bachelor's degree in music from the UCV; a year later he finished his undergraduate studies in oboe performance from the Conservatory of Music of the same institution. In 1998 he was awarded a fellowship from the Organization of American States (OAS) to pursue graduate studies in music at The Catholic University of America (CUA). In May 2000 he earned his master's degree in oboe performance with a concentration in Latin American music from CUA. In 2006 he received a fellowship from the Chilean government to complete a Ph.D. program in music history with a concentration in Latin American music at CUA, where he is currently finishing his second year. Nelson Niño began contributing to RIPM in 2006, indexing music journals published in Chile between 1852 and 1950. He is particularly interested in native instruments of the Andes region and the influence of these instruments in the production of South American classical composers.
