Russkiy muzïkal'nïy vestnik = Русскій музыкальный вѣстникъ

The journal Русскій музыкальный вѣстникъ = Russkiy muzikal’niy vestnik ("Russian Music Bulletin") was published from 1880 to 1882. Thirty-three issues of the journal were published in 1880, forty in 1881, and four in 1882.

Edited by Alexander Adrianovich Astafiev and Victor Nikolaevich Mandelstam, the purpose of the journal was to cover musical life in Russia, while introducing Russian readers to a wider international context. To this end, the editors intended to inform the reader about musicological debates taking place in Europe at the time.

The first page of each issue contained analyses by Russian authors of recently published musical compositions and new operas, as well as biographical portraits of composers and performers. The section "Musical Chronicle" described events in the musical life of Russia, especially concerts in St. Petersburg. Sacred music and musical education topics were discussed. The bibliography section reported the publication of new musical works, editions, and books on music. Under the heading "Musical News," short information from foreign correspondents appeared. Advertising concluded each issue.

The journal represents the panorama of musical life at the beginning of 1880s. Of peculiar interest are the articles by famous musical figures in the Russian musicological panorama of that time, such as Caesar Antonovich Kui, Pavel Platonovich Weimarn, Kirill Eduardovich Weber, Vladimir Sergeyevich Baskin, Peter Andreevich Schurovsky, Alexander Adrianovich Astafiev and others.

A musical supplement, generally four or six pages in length and consisting of piano and vocal works, was published with each issue. Russian and foreign works were both included.
